The Arc of Island & Skagit Partners with Local Schools to Meet Mandated Requirements
According to Senate Bill 6313, October is Disabilities Awareness Month! Section 3 of Senate Bill 6313 states: “Annually, during the month of October, each public school shall conduct or promote educational activities that provide instruction, awareness, and understanding of disability history and people with disabilities. The activities may include, but not be limited to, school assemblies or guest speaker presentations.”
On Friday, October 21, 2011, the Mount Vernon High School welcomed guest speaker Joy Caldwell, Executive Director for The Arc of Island & Skagit Counties. Joy gave a presentation on the history of developmental disabilities and presented the school with a box of books and DVD’s for teachers’ use in classrooms, designed to help schools comply with these un-funded requirements.
Each resource box contains a variety of captivating contemporary books and movies that offer instruction, awareness, and understanding to help educate our local students about intellectual, developmental, physical, and learning disabilities. The donation of this box was made possible by the collective efforts of The Arc, local businesses, and individuals from the community; The Arc will be delivering boxes to more school districts soon.
If you would like to sponsor a box or individual resources, please contact us or donate here.
